چکیده

An idealized visual pigment absorbance spectrum is used together with a Framers-tionig dispersion relation to calculate the contribution of the visual pigment to the refractive index of the fly photoreceptor. It appears that an absorption coeftcient of OGlO pm’ results in a refractive index variation of less than 5 x IO-*. The effect of this smali variation on waveguide properties of the fly photoreceptor is found to be negligible. It is argued that this conclusion also holds for other v&al photoneceptors.

Ultrastructural Study of Cadmium Effects on Photoreceptors and Ganglionic Cells of Retinal Layer in Mice Embryo

Purpose: In this study, TEM was used to asses the ultra structural effects of Cd on Photoreceptor and Ganglionic cells of mouce retinal layer. Materials and Methods: 30 mice hi1Vebeen used in three groups (experimental I, II & control). On 9th day of gestation, experimental groups have received a single IP injection of Cadmium- chlorid (Cd C12) solution in saline, 3 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg respectiv...

Sunscreen for Fish: Co-Option of UV Light Protection for Camouflage

Many animals change their body pigmentation according to illumination of their environment. In aquatic vertebrates, this reaction is mediated through aggregation or dispersion of melanin-filled vesicles (melanosomes) in dermal pigment cells (melanophores). The adaptive value of this behavior is usually seen in camouflage by allowing the animal to visually blend into the background. When exposed...

The influence of chromatic background on the photosensitivity of tilapia erythrophores

Non-mammalian vertebrates and invertebrates use extraretinal photoreceptors to detect light and perform diverse non-image-forming functions. Compared to well-studied visual systems, the effect of ambient light conditions on photosensory systems of extraretinal photoreceptors is poorly understood. Chromatophores are photosensitive dermal pigment cells that play an important role in the formation...

Histochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium

Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...

Ancestral gene reconstruction and synthesis of ancient rhodopsins in the laboratory.

Laboratory synthesis of ancestral proteins offers an intriguing opportunity to study the past directly. The development of Bayesian methods to infer ancestral sequences, combined with advances in models of molecular evolution, and synthetic gene technology make this an increasingly promising approach in evolutionary studies of molecular function. Visual pigments form the first step in the bioch...
